Cave Story: Doukutsu Monogatari

Cave Story, or Doukutsu Monogatari, is a Japanese freeware PC side-scrolling platformer game developed by Studio Pixel   . It has been translated into English by Aeon Genesis Translations   and will have an official translation script published sometime in the near future.
This is really one of those games that can be considered an almost masterpiece of game design. There are so many wonderful and classic gaming elements, that I cannot even begin to describe just one quality well enough to say "It is for this one reason alone that Cave Story is a great game." There is just so much effort, originality and ingenuity behind this game and it really shows more and more as you play through it.

More info on Cave Story can be found on this web-site

AROS Port was handled by Bszilard Biró.

And it can be downloaded here and the data for Cave Story Deluxe here

Install procedure:
Copy "Doukutsu.exe" and the "data" directory next to the executable. After that all you have to is to start "nx", and have fun.

Frogatto and Friends: leaping and bounding on AROS

Frogatto & Friends is an open-source “platformer” game which resembles an old-school 2D platformer game, starring a certain quixotic frog named Frogatto.
It's a big adventure with the usual classic stuff gathered in the videogame decades history in the genre - you walk and jump between solid footholds, fight monsters, collect coins, talk to people and buy new stuff, whilst you lead the frog through the story.
Althought the authors claim not trying to clone any specific game, a few games spring to mind when palying these, and naturally the character does remind Superfrog in the Amiga from Team 17 (gameplay wise it's a diferent story).

The original game website can be found here: http://www.frogatto.com/

AROS Port was handled by Bszilárd Biró and has some quirks and bugs at the moment...

Download the executable here and the data here...

Notes:
  • Don't let the stylish graphics fool you, this is an OpenGL game, and it's unplayable without 3D acceleration.
  • It takes some time to generate the "zipball"

The Goonies - Classic remake on AROS

This is a remake of one of Konami classics: The Goonies.

This game was made by Konami in 1986. There were both a NES version and an MSX version of the game; this remake is based on the MSX Version.
The remake was made for the 2006 competition organized by Retro Remakes.

The port was handled by (kas1e), and it's based on the OS4 and MorphOS earlier ports.

Story:
The action takes place in the sleepy seaside town of Cauldron Point - down in an area known as the Goon Docks. The Goonies are a group of local kids - Mikey, Brand, Mouth, Chunk and Data. One day they find an old treasure map in Mikey's attic. Data figures that this must be the fabulous hidden treasure of the notorious local pirate, One-Eyed Willy. The girls, Andy and Stef, join the other Goonies and the adventure begins. But the secret underground tunnels they are exploring are actually the hideout of the Fratelli Gang, and the Goonies are soon trapped! The Goonies have a powerful ally on their side, however, in the form of the huge and amiable Sloth.

GISH - sticky glob of gaming goodness...

Gish isn't your average hero, in fact he's not your average anything... see Gish is a ball of tar. A Sunday stroll with his lady friend Brea goes awry when a shadowy figure emerges from an open man hole and pulls Brea into the ground below. Following Brea's calls for help Gish suddenly finds himself in the subterranean sewers of Dross, a long forgotten city filled with twisting corridors, evil traps and some of the most demented creatures imaginable.

With his gelatinous structure as his only means of defense Gish must follow the echoing cries of his damsel in distress deep into the earth below. What freakish creatures dwell in this subterranean land? Who is Brea's captor? And just how far down does the rabbit hole go?

Life isn't easy when you're a 12 pound ball of tar...

The version available was ported by Yannick Erb.

You'll need to download the demo version of the game or buy the full version and install data from it.

Super Methane Bros - Puff and Blow...

Super Methane Brothers is a 1993 platform arcade game released for Amiga by Apache Software Ltd..
The gameplay is similar to Taito's Bubble Bobble.

Puff and Blow each have a Methane Gas Gun which fires a cloud of immobilising gas. If this comes into contact with a bad guy he will be absorbed into the gas and then float around the screen for a limited time. Bad guys are harmless in this state. Puff and Blow must suck the floating gas clouds into their guns and throw against a wall to destroy them. Bad guys then turn into bonuses which can be collected.

This is a conversion of the Commodore Amiga game, by Mark Rombust with permission by Apache Software Ltd to release this game as GPL. AROS port has been done by Yannick Erb.
